Measuring a grand total of 4,421 ha, the Sonian forest is Belgium’s largest area of woodland and the perfect place for some lovely walks. Some beech trees are more than 200 years old. The forest’s current mix of deciduous trees goes back to the Austrian era (1714-1795).
At the edge of the historic city centre lies the magnificent and picturesque beguinage. It is among the 13 Flemish beguinages recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage. You can immediately sense the serene atmosphere, harmony and private nature of beguinage life in the Middle Ages.
