  • With its 500 hectares, Walenbos is a fledgling where nature reserves are concerned. The land was entirely owned by a host of different private owners up until the mid-1970s.
  • The widest stretch of the Walenbos is managed by the Department of Forest and Wildlife.
  • The forest is home to the largest alder forest in Flanders.
  • Its name (which means a deep pool caused by a dike burst, in Dutch) is most likely in reference to the boggy, damp soil of the area.
