Arenberg Castle is an example of traditional brick and sandstone architecture.
The de Croy family took over the domain in 1446 and, in approximately 1600, Duke Charles II of Croy ordered a moat to be built around the castle and added a park and avenue towards Leuven.
Lodewijk Englebert van Arenberg, also known as ‘the blind duke', was a great defender of the arts and science, and therefore of much support to Professor J.P. Minckelers, as the inventor of coal gas.
In 1783, the first ever coal gas-filled balloon took off from the square in front of the castle.
In 1916 the Duke of Arenberg donated the domain to K.U. Leuven, who used the premises to accommodate its applied sciences department.
