Averbode Abbey was founded in 1135 on the initiative of Arnold II, as the Earl of Loon.
It was originally a ’double cloister' accommodating both men and women, but was ‘undoubled’ indefinitely in the early 13th century.
It is an abbey of the Premonstratensians, otherwise known as the Norbertines or White Canons and has 78 members, 45 of whom live and work in the abbey.
The Gothic gate house was built in the second half of the 14th century and is the oldest remaining part.
The abbey now contains guests’ quarters, a regional product shop and a reflection centre.
On the left side of the abbey lies the Maria Park with a series of original groups of statues.
